Meet the Physician: A quick look into the life of Dr. A. L. Shaw

pon meeting Dr. Shaw, he will ask you to call him "Sonny" and immediately develop an geniune interest in you as a person. He is naturally curious as evidenced by his asking many questions and listening intently. He is a cajun fond of his tobasco and spicy food, and he is a "patient’s" physician passionately involved in finding the cause of and relief for pain which robs the patient of an acceptable quality of life. When he is not treating patients, he is at his computer searching the internet.
Dr. Shaw began his passion for the treatment of chronic, acute and cancer pain as a resident in anesthesiology at the University of Washington Medical School in Seattle. Under the teaching of Dr. John Bonica, a pioneer in pain medicine, he began a career in both pain medicine and anesthesiology. Today, Dr. Shaw is chariman of The Texas Institute of Pain Medicine and also serve as Chairman of the Department of Anesthesiology at John Peter Smith Hospital in Fort Worth, Texas.
Committed to excellence and the mastery of skills necessary to provide comprehensive pain treatment, Dr. Shaw was the first physician in this part of the country to earn Diplomate American Board of Anesthesiology with Added Qualification in Pain Management and Diplomate American Board of Pain Medicine. He is the only physician in the nation possessing these two board certifications who has earned proficiency by the American Academy of Medical Acupuncture. Dr. Shaw has acquired Recertification by the American Board of Anesthesiology and Diplomate American Academy of Pain Management and Diplomate American Board of Quality Assurance and Utilization Review Physicians.
Captializing on his experience and training, Dr. Shaw takes a "hands-on" approach listening to the patient and utilizing the least invasive, least expensive method possible to provide an effective treatment. He is committed to setting the standard of care for pain and to the collection of data to measure outcomes for ongoing quality assurance.
Dr. Shaw lives in Colleyville with his wife, Joan, and his Great Dane, Gretel.
