Painful Facts
- More than 75 million Americans suffer chronic, handicapping pain. (Tollison, 1987)
- Seventy-five to 80 million people in the United States are estimated to suffer chronic pain, and this is generally considered a conservative estimate. (Kotarba, 1983)
- Chronic low back pain, for example, affects almost 31 million Americans and represents the most common cause of disability in persons less than 45 years of age. (White & Gordon)
- The most prevalent of all painful disorders is, however, headaches. Headaches strike 70 to 80 percent of the American population at least once a month. (Tollison & Tollison, 1982)
