Widget Corporation (WC) has 2,000 employees consisting of management, secretarial personnel, sales, and the hands-on workers who construct the company’s widgets. Upon review of the exorbitant increases in health care costs for the company, the Widget executives demand a three year history of their company’s costly predicament. The results of the study are troubling to the executives:

Over the past three years, a large percentage of management complained of severe headaches and missed several weeks of work due to stress and these headaches. Sore arms and neck problems plagued the secretarial staff, while low back pain and low back injuries were responsible for 35-40% of all missed days for the factory workers. (Without a great deal of stress and work, the sales force had few complaints.) Another troubling discovery was the fact that medical costs for WC had risen from 15-20% every year for the past three years. The options for WC seem to be few and not very promising.
